Cambridge Cay to Rock Sound, Eleuthera
Thursday, May 9, 2013
We left Cambridge Cay with very low wind out of the east and fairly low swells. Once we entered the deep water of the Exuma Sound the swells were hitting us on the beam and I had to quickly prepare the interior for rocking action, putting away photos and other items that tend to fall off shelves. We made excellent time, motorsailing at 8 kts arriving in 6.5 hrs, our longest sail for quite awhile.
The water in Rock Sound is cloudy so we had to turn off the watermaker as we entered the anchorage. From the water there are quite a few buildings on the shore. We are in civilization again. We went ashore as soon as we got everything put away and made sure the anchor was holding. There is a nice dock for dinghies but the beaches in this bay are not inviting, in fact there is just one sort of rocky beach nearby for Daisy. Our first stop was Dingle Motors, a one-stop-shop place, kind of like a Seven 11 with fuel, convenience store groceries, car rental, wifi cards, and hardware, but all on a small scale.
Our Batelco signals are great for the iPad, aircard and the phone. However, I have to upload some blog entries so purchased an unlimited data card from Dingles. We are getting a very strong signal from the boat and in the past this wifi worked well for uploading the blog, but not today! This has become an annoying problem, having to buy wifi just for this website. For everything else we can use the iPad and the aircard on the computer. I’ve determined that when we are back in Florida I’m going to look for another way to compose the blog that works on the iPad.
We are almost out of Daisy’s antibiotic and because there are no veterinarian offices in Eleuthera staffed all the time, we are going to check the clinic here. Although we’ll be back in Stuart at the end of the month, we want to have the medicine in case her incontinence returns. Unfortunately the clinic was already closed today, as was the grocery store.
Rock Sound has a great grocery store and we are anxious to get there. It is similar to a stateside store and the prices are more reasonable than in The Exumas , especially what we’ve been paying since we left Georgetown.
While the beach on this side of Eleuthera is not very nice, there are beautiful pink sand beaches on the Atlantic side. While we are here we will ride our bikes over there.
