It’s a bit of a splurge for us, but I must admit staying at the
Bimini Sands Resort and Marina is worth every dollar. It is only costing us $45 for the slip, plus $10 a day for electric. If we stay seven days, we get 10% off the total price. That is extremely reasonable, even more remarkable because of the setting. Looking at the weather forecast there is a good possibility we will be here a week, or more.
We are steps from the ocean with sandy and rocky beaches. Above, Daisy ran down the dune ahead of us and patiently waited. We didn’t tell her to sit. She just ran down, turned around and sat down. The only down side of walking on the beach is that there are no-see-ums here as soon as the sun starts to set and early in the morning.
Last evening, we were on the beach at sunset. It wasn’t the very best sunset we have ever seen, but anytime we can see a sun setting over the ocean, it is breathtaking. In Florida, since we are on the east coast we never get to see this although we have seen plenty of beautiful sunrises over the ocean.
T
he marina/resort has two pools. One is located near us and has a bar next to it. The other is a larger infinity pool overlooking the ocean. Unfortunately, the pools aren’t heated and with the short winter days, even though the days have been sunny, the water doesn’t heat up enough to provide comfortable swimming. The ocean, however, is quite warm.
Today, we checked to see if we could go on a kayak excursion listed on the resort’s website. Apparently, all of their activities are only available in the summer, when the resort is full of guests. I doubt the marina is packed then, as that is hurricane season. In the States, the marina prices go up in the winter and here they go up in the summer.
In the winter, the advertised $20 per half day kayak excursion is a “private charter” which costs $30 for the first hour and $15 for each additional hour, per person. This is understandable since with more people on the excursions, they get much more per hour. We can take our kayaks on the water ourselves, but I’m sure the guide would take us to more interesting sites. They have a number of other activities, such as snorkel excursions, shark encounters, boat tours, a guided nature trail tour, and more. We could do any of these, but it would cost the $30 an hour each price for our private tour.
All of the water around us, including the ocean, has been very calm so far, but the wind will be picking up in the next few days. The photo on the left shows the man-made bay with condos all around the water and with slips on all sides. The condos on the west side are on the ocean.
It’s such a pleasure to be able to take Daisy on a beach and not worry about keeping her on a leash. She always stays with us but likes to run into the water. Also, she can go on any beach in the Bahamas, unlike in Florida where dogs are rarely allowed on beaches.. All of the beaches in the Bahamas are public, even those with private homes on them. In those cases, you can go up to the high water line. Whenever someone approaches us on the beach Daisy gets her leash back on. However, it’s almost always possible to find a deserted beach wherever we go.
