1455 Anchor down at Lake Sylvia
Total Time: 5 hour 15 minutes
Total Distance: 30.1 nm
We debated whether to anchor in Middle River or Lake Sylvia or take a mooring ball at the city marina, Las Olas. Lake Sylvia won. Surprisingly, there were already five boats here. We figured most cruisers are where they are going to be for the summer and fall, but these people are still traveling, like us. The local boaters come here on the weekend, but during the week, it’s mainly cruisers who are traveling through the area. Daisy always knows where the coolest spot is, and she quickly found some shade on the foredeck after we stopped.
We will probably stay here a couple of days. There are multiple choices to go ashore. For $15, we can take about a ten minute dinghy ride to Las Olas Marina and we also get use of their showers and laundry, neither of which we need. There is a rickety dock near the Swimming Hall of Fame near Bahia Mar Marina where we went to a month ago to walk Daisy. Also there is a public boat ramp down one of the canals which is not far and a good dog walking area. Finally, there is the Raw Bar at the end of a canal, probably a 20 minute dinghy ride. For $10 you can tie up to the restaurant’s dinghy dock and walk a short distance to all of the stores on Cordova and 17th, including several we need: a Sprint store, Publix Grocery, a used book store, and a Great Clips hair salon where I can get my hair cut for $13. Since we have lived on the boat these past four years, I have given up on hairdressers and usually we go to Great Clips or some other cheap hair salon. Actually, we have always gotten good haircuts at Great Clips and now that we are “seniors” it only costs $13 plus tip. There’s also much more in that shopping area, including an Ace Hardware, a Radio Shack, and the ever present Starbucks. We’ll probably go to the Raw Bar dock tomorrow and run our errands. Then, we can use the $10 we paid for lunch or dinner at the restaurant.
