Removing the Hybrid Components
Wednesday, March 21, 2012
Today Joel and Bertrand, the Lagoon conversion technicians from France, removed most of the hybrid system. Above are some of the heavy cables they pulled out. On the left is our large genset which we will keep, even though a smaller one would be more fuel efficient. Comparing the cost of a smaller one to the difference in fuel over years convinced us it wasn’t worth the purchase. Under the hybrid system, whenever we motorsailed, the genset was on. Now, with diesel engines, we will get better fuel efficiency and will have a more reliable, safe system.
Joel and Bertrand have traveled the world converting Lagoon 420’s. We had to wait many months to schedule them. Their most recent work was during February in New Zealand, converting S/V Dignity. She was one of the early hybrids and has been circumnavigating. Sadly, Joel and Bertrand do not speak much English, but they are phenomenal workers, arriving at sunrise and working into the evening hours. They have done this so many times they can tell you what will happen each day, almost to the hour. Photos of the removal.
