Amelia Island/Fernandino Beach
Thursday, October 22, 2009
The photo above shows our view for most of the day. We left Duplin River, GA at 8 am and arrived in Fernandino Beach at 5:30 pm. It took us an hour to come up the channel as the tide was going out so we could barely make 3 kts. That’s what makes traveling on the ocean so much farther than taking the ICW, going in and out of the channels. The skies were blue and it was about 80 degrees three miles out on the Atlantic. We’re now back in Florida and it’s hot.
Amelia Island, FL is on one side of the channel and Cumberland Island, GA is on the other side. Fernandino Beach is the town on Amelia Island.
After we dropped our anchor, we took the dinghy ashore. The Ferandino Beach Marina has a free dinghy dock. The town is shop after shop of high end tourist stores, restaurants and bars. There were quite a few people walking on the sidewalks in the late afternoon and evening.
We haven’t been at a marina since leaving Charleston and the boat is getting dirty. We’ll have to wait until we get to Ft. Lauderdale to wash her off.
Tomorrow we’ll head to St. Augustine.
